Shale gas was recently found in the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation (LCNF) of the Micangshan tectonic zone of south Shaanxi (MTZSS), but not in commercial quantities. To determine the laws governing the generation, enrichment, and desorption of shale gases in overmatured shale strata in the LCNF of MTZSS, we carried out in situ desorption experiments on nine shale core samples and got 168 desorbed gas samples at different phases of desorption. Also measured were the chemical and carbon isotopic compositions of these desorbed gas samples and the geochemical parameters of the shale core samples. CH4 was the predominant hydrocarbon shale gas identified in the 82.06-98.48% range, suggesting that the gases were mainly dry. The nonhydrocarbon gases found were CO2 and H2. The CH4 content of the desorbed gas samples dropped continuously during desorption, lowering the dryness index to 98.48 and 92.26% of the first and last desorbed shale gas, respectively. The change in the gas ratio during shale gas desorption proved that the adsorbability of the LCNF to the various gases follows the trend H2 > CO2 > C2H6 > CH4 > He. Further, δ13C2H6 and δ13CH4 become heavier during desorption, showing isotopic fractionation arising from the desorption-diffusion coeffect. As the desorption temperature increases, the value of δ13CH4 increases because 12CH4 is more sensitive to temperature than 13CH4, so it is with the ethane. Similar to the LCNF shale gas in other areas of China, the desorbed shale gases are characteristic of carbon isotope reversal (CIR) (δ13CH4 > δ13C2H6). The cracking of the residual soluble organic matter at the high overmaturity stage mixed with the cracking of kerogen at the early stage of maturation, causing CIR. Furthermore, the desorbed gas content was proportionally and inversely related to the CIR degree and final dryness index of the desorbed gas, respectively. Moreover, the carbon isotope fractionation degree of CH4 and δ13C1 of the last desorbed gas correlated positively with the desorbed gas content and the desorbed time of the gas. In conclusion, the four parameters are effective parameters for identifying shale gas sweet spots.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic surgery is challenging owing to the anatomical characteristics of the pancreas. Increasing attention has been paid to changes in quality of life (QOL) after pancreatic surgery. AIM: To summarize and analyze current research results on QOL after pancreatic surgery. METHODS: A systematic search of the literature available on PubMed and EMBASE was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Relevant studies were identified by screening the references of retrieved articles. Studies on patients' QOL after pancreatic surgery published after January 1, 2012, were included. These included prospective and retrospective studies on patients' QOL after several types of pancreatic surgeries. The results of these primary studies were summarized inductively. RESULTS: A total of 45 articles were included in the study, of which 13 were related to pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), seven to duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR), nine to distal pancreatectomy (DP), two to central pancreatectomy (CP), and 14 to total pancreatectomy (TP). Some studies showed that 3-6 months were needed for QOL recovery after PD, whereas others showed that 6-12 months was more accurate. Although TP and PD had similar influences on QOL, patients needed longer to recover to preoperative or baseline levels after TP. The QOL was better after DPPHR than PD. However, the superiority of the QOL between patients who underwent CP and PD remains controversial. The decrease in exocrine and endocrine functions postoperatively was the main factor affecting the QOL. Minimally invasive surgery could improve patients' QOL in the early stages after PD and DP; however, the long-term effect remains unclear. CONCLUSION: The procedure among PD, DP, CP, and TP with a superior postoperative QOL is controversial. The long-term benefits of minimally invasive versus open surgeries remain unclear. Further prospective trials are warranted.

Clubroot disease caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae (P. brassicae) severely threatens the cultivation of Cruciferous plants, especially Chinese cabbage. Recently, resistance genes in plants have been reported to encode for a Ca2+-permeable channel in the plasma membrane, which can mediate the cytosolic Ca2+ increase in plant cells upon pathogen attack. However, the downstream Ca2+ sensor and decoder are still unknown. In this study, we identified the virulent and avirulent P. brassicae isolates (Pbs) of two near isogenic lines, CR 3-2 and CS 3-2, with CR 3-2 harboring clubroot resistant gene BraCRa. The transcriptomic analysis was then conducted with CR 3-2 after inoculating with virulent isolate PbE and avirulent isolate Pb4. From the differentially expressed genes of transcriptomic data, we identified a Ca2+-sensor encoding gene, BraCBL1.2, that was highly induced in CR 3-2 during infection by Pb4 but not by PbE. Moreover, GUS histochemical staining and subcellular localization analysis revealed that BraCBL1.2 was specifically expressed in the root hair cells of Arabidopsis and encoded a putative Ca2+ sensor localized in the plasma membrane. We also developed an assay to investigate the BraCRa-mediated hypersensitive response (HR) in tobacco leaves. The results suggest that BraCBL1.2 is involved in the BraCRa-mediated plant ETI immune response against P. brassicae. In addition, we verified that overexpression of BraCBL1.2 enhanced clubroot resistance in Arabidopsis. Collectively, our data identified the involvement of a Ca2+ sensor in BraCRa-mediated clubroot resistance in Chinese cabbage, providing a theoretical basis for further research on the resistance of Chinese cabbage to P. brassicae.

Previous studies have demonstrated that diallyl disulfide (DADS) exhibits potent anti-tumor activity. However, the pharmacological actions of DADS in inhibiting the growth of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells have not been clarified. Herein, we show that DADS treatment impairs the activation of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) to decrease PRPP (5-phosphate ribose-1-pyrophosphate) production, enhancing DNA damage and cell apoptosis, and inhibiting the growth of CRC cells. Mechanistically, DADS treatment promoted POU2F1 K48-linked ubiquitination and degradation by attenuating the PI3K/AKT signaling to up-regulate TRIM21 expression in CRC cells. Evidently, TRIM21 interacted with POU2F1, and induced the K272 ubiquitination of POU2F1. The effects of DADS on the enhanced K272 ubiquitination of POU2F1, the PPP flux, PRPP production, DNA damage and cell apoptosis as well as the growth of CRC tumors in vivo were significantly mitigated by TRIM21 silencing or activating the PI3K signaling in CRC cells. Conversely, the effects of DADS were enhanced by TRIM21 over-expression or inhibiting the PI3K/AKT signaling in CRC cells. Collectively, our findings reveal a novel mechanism by which DADS suppresses the growth of CRC by promoting POU2F1 ubiquitination, and may aid in design of novel therapeutic intervention of CRC.

One of the key features of cancer is energy metabolic reprogramming which is tightly related to cancer proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and chemotherapy resistance. NcRNAs are a class of RNAs having no protein-coding potential and mainly include microRNAs, lncRNAs and circRNAs. Accumulated evidence has suggested that ncRNAs play an essential role in regulating cancer metabolic reprogramming, and the altered metabolic networks mediated by ncRNAs primarily drive carcinogenesis by regulating the expression of metabolic enzymes and transporter proteins. Importantly, accumulated research has revealed that dysregulated ncRNAs mediate metabolic reprogramming contributing to the generation of therapeutic tolerance. Elucidating the molecular mechanism of ncRNAs in cancer metabolic reprogramming can provide promising metabolism-related therapeutic targets for treatment as well as overcome therapeutic tolerance. In conclusion, this review updates the latest molecular mechanisms of ncRNAs related to cancer metabolic reprogramming.

Regulating ion transport is a prevailing strategy to suppress lithium dendrite growth, in which the distribution of ion regulatory sites plays an important role. Here a hyperbranched polyamidoamine (HBPA) grafted polyethylene (PE) composite separator (HBPA-g-PE) is reported. The densely and uniformly distributed positive -NH2 and negative -CHNO- groups efficiently restrict the anion migration and promote Li+ transport at the surface of the lithium metal anode. The obtained Li foil symmetric cell delivers a stable cycle performance with a low-voltage hysteresis of 130 mV for over 1500 h (3000 cycles) at an ultrahigh current density of 20 mA cm-2 and a practical areal capacity of 5 mAh cm-2. Moreover, HBPA-g-PE separator enables a practical lithium-sulfur battery to achieve over 200-cycle stable performance with initial and retained capacity of 700 and 455 mAh g-1, at a high sulfur loading of 4 mg cm-2 and a low electrolyte content/sulfur loading ratio of 8 µL mg-1.

The growing global demand for sustainable and cost-effective energy storage solutions has driven the rapid development of zinc batteries. Despite significant progress in recent years, enhancing the energy density of zinc batteries remains a crucial research focus. One prevalent strategy involves the development of high-capacity and/or high-voltage cathode materials. CuS, a commonly used electrode material, exhibits a two-electron transfer mechanism; however, the reduced sulfion lacks electrochemical activity and thereby limits its discharge capacity and redox potential. In this study, we activate a CuS cathode to form a high-valence Cu2+&S compound using a deep-eutectic-solvent (DES)-based electrolyte. The presence of Cl- in the DES-based electrolyte is crucial to the reversibility of the redox chemistry, and the liquid-phase-involved electrochemical process facilitates redox kinetics. A four-electron transfer pathway involving five reaction steps is identified for the CuS electrode, which unleashes the full electrochemical activity of the S element. Consequently, the full cell delivers a large discharge capacity of ∼800 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 and yields a high discharge plateau starting at 1.58 V, contributing to energy densities of up to 650 Wh kg-1 (based on CuS). This work offers a promising approach to developing high-energy zinc batteries.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep duration is an important factor influencing health outcomes. The association between sleep duration and kidney function remains elusive. This study aimed to explore the association between sleep duration and chronic kidney disease (CKD) amongst Chinese adults. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in the wave of 2009. Participants were divided into three groups: ≤ 6 h/day (short sleepers), 7-8 h/day (regular sleepers) and ≥ 9 h/day (long sleepers) according to self-reported sleep duration. CKD was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. RESULTS: A total of 8096 Chinese adults (45.9% men) with a mean age of 50.6 years were included in the study. Compared with regular sleepers, both short and long regular sleepers had a higher prevalence of CKD. A U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and CKD was displayed by restricted cubic spline curve (P-overall < 0.001, P-nonlinear < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression models revealed that both short and long sleep duration were clinically associated with higher odds of CKD, after adjustments for covariates [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.25 and 1.30; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00-1.56 and 1.08-1.54, for short and long sleep duration, respectively]. In subgroup analyses, we found the association was still observed in participants without hypertension or diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSION: Short or long sleep duration was associated with CKD in the general population.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of retroperitonealization of the pancreatic stump in distal pancreatectomy. METHODS: Clinical data from the Tongji Hospital pancreatic database were retrospectively reviewed in this study. The data of 68 patients who underwent retroperitonealized distal pancreatectomy from January, 2019, to April, 2021, were collected and analyzed. Sixty-four patients who underwent conventional distal pancreatectomy during the same period were matched. We compared and analyzed the operative outcomes and postoperative complications between the patients in the two groups before and after propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS: Before PSM, the operative outcomes and postoperative complications were comparable between the two groups. After PSM, the retroperitonealized group had a lower incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) (10.53% vs 31.58%, P = 0.047) and shorter time until drainage removal (10.00, 8.00-13.00 days vs 13.00, 10.00-18.00 days, P = 0.005). In the univariate and multivariate regression analyses, non-retroperitonealization and intra-abdominal infection were found to be independent risk factors for postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). CONCLUSION: Retroperitonealization of the pancreatic stump can reduce the incidence of POPF after distal pancreatectomy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most malignant breast cancer subtype with a short survival time and high morality. There is an urgent need for effective indicators able to predict tumor progression and provide reference for adjusting the therapeutic strategy of TNBC. lncRNA semaphorin 3B antisense RNA1-AS1 (SEMA3B-AS1) was previously identified to be correlated with the stemness and autophagy of breast cancer. SEMA3B-AS1's role in TNBC was investigated in the present study, aiming to explore a novel biomarker for the development and prognosis of TNBC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SEMA3B-AS1 expression was detected in tissue samples from 113 TNBC patients using PCR. The clinical significance of SEMA3B-AS1 was assessed by the Chi-square test and Cox analysis. The in vitro function of SEMA3B-AS1 was investigated by CCK8 and Transwell assay. Study of molecular mechanism, correlation analysis and dual-luciferase reporter assay were employed to assess the correlation of SEMA3B-AS1 with miR-513c-5p. RESULTS: A significant down-regulation of SEMA3B-AS1 was observed in TNBC, which was related to patient TNM stage, lymph node metastasis, and Ki67 levels. SEMA3B-AS1 down-regulation indicated patients' adverse prognoses and served as an independent prognostic factor. In vitro, SEMA3B-AS1 suppressed the stemness, proliferation, and metastasis of TNBC cells. Moreover, SEMA3B-AS1 negatively regulated miR-513c-5p, which could reverse the inhibitory effects of SEMA3B-AS1 on TNBC cells. CONCLUSION: SEM3B-AS1 indicates the severity of TNBC patients and regulates tumor progression via modulating miR-513c-5p.

BACKGROUND: The use of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) in pancreatic head cancer remains controversial, and an appropriate surgical approach can help improve perioperative safety and oncological outcomes. This study aimed to assess the short-term outcomes and long-term survival of the superior mesenteric artery first (SMA-first) approach in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) undergoing LPD. METHODS: The data of 91 consecutive PDAC patients who underwent LPD from June 2014 to June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups, the modified SMA-first approach group, using a combined posterior and anterior approach, and the conventional approach group. Perioperative outcomes, pathologic results, and overall survival (OS) were compared between groups, and propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis was performed. RESULTS: The number of lymph nodes harvested was greater in the SMA-first approach group (19 vs. 15, P = 0.021), as did the results in the matched cohort (21 vs. 15, P = 0.046). No significant difference was observed in the R0 resection rate (93.3% vs. 82.6%, P = 0.197), but the involvement of the SMA margin was indeed lower in the SMA-first approach group (0 vs. 13%). There were no obvious variances between the two groups in terms of intraoperative bleeding, operative time, overall and major postoperative complication rates, and mortality in either the original cohort or matched cohort. The median OS was 21.8 months in the SMA-first group, whereas it was 19.8 months in the conventional group (P = 0.900). Survival also did not differ in the matched cohort (P = 0.558). TNM stage, resection margin, overall complications, and adjuvant therapy were independent risk factors affecting OS. CONCLUSION: The modified SMA-first approach is safe and feasible for PDAC patients undergoing LPD. It had a slight advantage in specimen quality, but OS was not significantly prolonged.

Aqueous copper-based batteries have many favourable properties and have thus attracted considerable attention, but their application is limited by their low operating voltage originating from the high potential of copper negative electrode (0.34 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). Herein, we propose a coordination strategy for reducing the intrinsic negative electrode redox potential in aqueous copper-based batteries and thus improving their operating voltage. This is achieved by establishing an appropriate coordination environment through the electrolyte tailoring via Cl- ions. When coordinated with chlorine, the intermediate Cu+ ions in aqueous electrolytes are successfully stabilized and the electrochemical process is decoupled into two separate redox reactions involving Cu2+/Cu+ and Cu+/Cu0; Cu+/Cu0 results in a redox potential approximately 0.3 V lower than that for Cu2+/Cu0. Compared to the coordination with water, the coordination with chlorine also results in higher copper utilization, more rapid redox kinetics, and superior cycle stability. An aqueous copper-chlorine battery, harnessing Cl-/Cl0 redox reaction at the positive electrode, is discovered to have a high discharge voltage of 1.3 V, and retains 77.4% of initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. This work may open up an avenue to boosting the voltage and energy of aqueous copper batteries.

A growing number of observational studies have been carried out on the relationship between serum magnesium and risk of dyslipidemia, but their results were conflicting. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum magnesium levels and risk of dyslipidemia in Chinese adult residents. We used data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in the wave of 2009 to conduct a cross-sectional study. A total of 8,457 participants (47.2% male) with a mean age of 50.5 years were assessed and divided into 4 groups based on quartiles of serum magnesium levels. We found that higher quartiles of serum magnesium were associated with increased prevalence of dyslipidemia. After adjustment for confounders, the results of logistic regression analyses indicated that there was an increased trend in dyslipidemia risk as quartiles of serum magnesium increased. The restricted cubic spline model revealed a nonlinear relationship between serum magnesium levels and dyslipidemia. In subgroup analyses, the positive relationship between serum magnesium levels and dyslipidemia was more significant in females than in males. Our study suggested that serum magnesium levels were positively associated with risk of dyslipidemia in Chinese adult population. Further research is needed to provide a deep understanding of the underlying mechanism of magnesium on lipid metabolism.

Adequate hydration is essential for the maintenance of health and physiological functions in humans. However, many older adults do not maintain adequate hydration, which is under-recognized and poorly managed. Older adults are more vulnerable to dehydration, especially those living with multiple chronic diseases. Dehydration is associated with adverse health outcomes in older adults, and acts as an independent factor of the hospital length of stay, readmission, intensive care, in-hospital mortality, and poor prognosis. Dehydration is a prevalent health problem in older adults, accounting for substantial economic and social burden. This review attempts to provide current knowledge of hydration including patterns of body water turnover, the complex mechanisms behind water homeostasis, the effects of dehydration on the health of the body, and practical guidance for low-intake dehydration in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a new cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy clinical classification system with recommended individual surgical strategy and to evaluate its clinical efficacy in treatment of cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy in Qilu Hospital in Shandong, China. From 2008 to 2015, patients with cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy were included to determine risk factors for intraoperative hemorrhage during cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy treatment. Univariable analysis and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to explore the independent risk factors for hemorrhage (300 mL or greater) during a cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy surgical procedure. The model was internally validated with a separate cohort. Receiver operating characteristic curve methodology was used to identify optimal thresholds for the identified risk factors to further classify cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy risk, and the recommended operative treatment was established for each classification group by expert consensus. A final cohort of patients from 2014 to 2022 were classified according to the new classification system, and the recommended surgical procedure and clinical outcomes were abstracted from the medical record. RESULTS: Overall, 955 patients with first-trimester cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy were included; 273 were used to develop a model to predict intraoperative hemorrhage with cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy, and 118 served as an internal validation group for the model. Anterior myometrium thickness at the scar (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.51, 95% CI 0.36-0.73) and average diameter of the gestational sac or mass (aOR 1.10, 95% CI 1.07-1.14) were independent risk factors for intraoperative hemorrhage of cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy. Five clinical classifications of cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy were established on the basis of the thickness and gestational sac diameter, and the optimal surgical option for each type was recommended by clinical experts. When the classification system was applied to a separate cohort of 564 patients with cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy, the overall success rate of recommended first-line treatment with the new classification grouping was 97.5% (550/564). No patients needed to undergo hysterectomy. Eighty-five percent of patients had a negative serum ß-hCG level within 3 weeks after the surgical procedure; 95.2% of patients resumed their menstrual cycles within 8 weeks. CONCLUSION: Anterior myometrium thickness at the scar and the diameter of the gestational sac were confirmed to be independent risk factors for intraoperative hemorrhage during cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy treatment. A new clinical classification system based on these factors with recommended surgical strategy resulted in high treatment success rates with minimal complications.

The colonization and expansion of plants on land is considered one of the most profound ecological revolutions, yet the precise timing remains controversial. Because land vegetation can enhance weathering intensity and affect terrigenous input to the ocean, changes in terrestrial plant biomass with distinct negative Δ199Hg and Δ200Hg signatures may overwrite the positive Hg isotope signatures commonly found in marine sediments. By investigating secular Hg isotopic variations in the Paleozoic marine sediments from South China and peripheral paleocontinents, we highlight distinct negative excursions in both Δ199Hg and Δ200Hg at Stage level starting in the early Silurian and again in the Carboniferous. These geochemical signatures were driven by increased terrestrial contribution of Hg due to the rapid expansion of vascular plants. These excursions broadly coincide with rising atmospheric oxygen concentrations and global cooling. Therefore, vascular plants were widely distributed on land during the Ordovician-Silurian transition (~444 million years), long before the earliest reported vascular plant fossil, Cooksonia (~430 million years).

INTRODUCTION: Benchmarking, a novel measuring tool for outcome comparisons, is a recent concept in surgery. The objectives of this review are to examine the concept, definition, and evolution of benchmarking and its application in surgery. METHODS: The literature about benchmarking was reviewed through an ever-narrowing search strategy, commencing from the concept, definition, and evolution of benchmarking to the application of benchmarking and experiences of benchmarking in surgery. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Science Direct databases were searched until 20 September 2022, in the English language according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. RESULTS: In the first phase of the literature search, the development of benchmarking was identified. The definitions of benchmarking evolved from a surveying term to a novel quality-improvement tool to assess the best achievable results in surgery. In the second phase, a total of 23 studies were identified about benchmarking in surgery, including esophagectomy, hepatic surgery, pancreatic surgery, rectum resection, and bariatric surgery. All studies were multicenter analyses from national, international, or global expert centers. Most studies (87.0%) adopted the definition that benchmark was the 75th percentile of the median values of centers. Performance metrics to define benchmarks were clinically relevant intraoperative and postoperative outcome indicators. CONCLUSION: Benchmarking in surgery is a novel quality-improvement tool to define and measure the best achievable results, establishing a meaningful reference to evaluate surgical performance.

Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by nocturnal intermittent hypoxemia and linked to oxidative stress. Evidence demonstrated that p66Shc plays a key role in regulating oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the expression of p66Shc in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with OSA and the association with polysomnographic parameters. Methods: Fifty-four OSA subjects and 19 no OSA controls were enrolled in this study. All the subjects underwent standard polysomnography. P66Shc mRNA and protein levels in the PBMCs were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Plasma 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT), oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) were measured by ELISA method. Results: P66Shc mRNA and protein levels in PBMCs were significantly higher in OSA patients than in controls. P66Shc mRNA was positively correlated with plasma 3-NT, oxLDL, AOPP, hypopnea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation index (ODI), percentage of total sleep time with oxygen saturation (SaO2) below 90% (CT90), epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and lymphocytes; negatively correlated with lowest SaO2 (LSaO2) and mean SaO2 (MSaO2). Further multivariate linear regression analysis showed that p66Shc mRNA levels were independently associated with AHI, MSaO2 and CT90. Conclusions: Oxidative stress regulator p66Shc may play a role in the pathophysiology of OSA and might serve as a potential biomarker for this disease.

Background: Increasing evidence supports that gut microbiota plays an important role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of sarcopenia is increasing in patients with heart failure. Muscle wasting is an independent predictor of death in heart failure patients. Aims: In this study, we aimed to explore the characteristics of gut microbiota and metabolites in heart failure patients with or without sarcopenia. Methods: Fecal samples of 33 heart failure patients without sarcopenia, 29 heart failure patients with sarcopenia, and 15 controls were collected. The intestinal microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing and the metabolites were detected using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. Results: There were significant differences in the overall microbial community structure and diversity between control and heart failure patients with or without sarcopenia. However, no clear clustering of samples was observed in heart failure with and without sarcopenia patients. Several bacterial, particularly Nocardiaceae, Pseudonocardiaceae, Alphaproteobacteria, and Slackia were significantly enriched in the heart failure patients without sarcopenia, while Synergistetes was more abundant in the heart failure patients with sarcopenia. Isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, and valeric acid were lower in heart failure patients with sarcopenia than that without sarcopenia but lacked significance. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that there are differences in the gut microbiota between control individuals and heart failure patients with or without sarcopenia. Modulating the gut microbiota may be a new target for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia in heart failure patients.
